🐶 How To Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

Summer means long walks, outdoor adventures, and lots of fun in the sun—but the heat can be tough on our furry friends. Dogs don’t sweat like humans do, so it’s important to take extra steps to keep them safe and comfortable when temperatures rise. Here are some simple, vet-approved tips to help your pup stay cool all season long.

1. Hydration Is Key 💧

Always keep fresh, cool water available for your dog. Carry a portable water bottle and collapsible bowl on walks, so your pup can take sips on the go. Adding ice cubes to their bowl at home is also a refreshing treat.

2. Avoid Midday Heat 🌞

The sun is strongest between 12 PM and 4 PM. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Hot pavement can burn their paws—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

3. Create Cool Resting Spots 🏡

Provide shady areas in your garden or home where your dog can relax. Indoors, use fans or air conditioning if possible. A cooling mat or damp towel on the floor works wonders too.

4. Refreshing Treats 🍦

Dogs love frozen snacks! Try freezing low-sodium chicken broth, fruits safe for dogs (like blueberries or watermelon), or simply ice cubes. They’ll stay hydrated and entertained at the same time.

5. Grooming & Coat Care ✂️

Brush your dog regularly to remove excess fur. For some breeds, trimming can help, but avoid shaving too close—your dog’s coat also protects against sunburn. Always check with your vet or groomer before making big changes.

6. Know the Warning Signs 🚨

Watch out for symptoms of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse. If you notice these signs, move your dog to a cool place, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
